The Cayenne management team combines over 100 years of experience in the medical device industry, with primary expertise in the less invasive surgery markets. The team background spans a range from large corporations to venture capital operations.
DAVID B. SPRINGER
David B. Springer, President and Chief Executive Officer, brings more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare and medical devices industries. Most recently, Springer held the position of President & Chief Executive Officer at CHF Solutions where among his many achievements was a successful acquisition of the company by Gambro. Prior to this, Springer held the position of Sr. Vice President for St. Jude Medical where he was successful in creating and leading all US strategic and operational plans. In 1997, he was a member of the founding management team of WebMD (formerly QDCS, Inc.) where he held the positions of Executive Vice President of Business Development and Senior Vice President of Sales. Prior to WebMD, Springer served in various leadership positions in sales, corporate accounts and marketing at Intermedics, Kimberly Clark Healthcare and Procter & Gamble. Springer received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.
RANDAL L. BUNESS
Randal L. Buness, Chief Financial Officer, is a CPA and senior financial executive with over 25 years of results-oriented leadership. Prior to joining Cayenne Medical, he served as Chief Financial Officer of multiple high-growth, public and private technology companies with annual sales up to $250 million. Such companies included United Medical Network, a medical communications company that he co-founded and which was acquired by Johnson & Johnson. His financial background includes expertise in venture capital, public stock offerings and mergers and acquisitions. Early in his career, Buness spent ten years in public accounting at Ernst & Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He graduated summa cum laude from Seattle University, where he earned a B.A. in business administration and accounting and he holds an M.B.A. in international finance from Thunderbird School of Global Management.
DEREK J. HARPER
Derek J. Harper, Vice President of Research and Development, joined the company in June 2005. Prior to joining Cayenne Medical, Harper held management positions in Research and Development as well as Marketing at Medtronic, PS Medical, MDC Research and MicroSolutions. Harper is a biomedical engineer with 20+ years of diverse experience in the medical industry and has authored co-authored 13 issued US patents related to medical devices. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering with a specialty in Bioengineering from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ.
RICHARD L. KOVACH
Mr. Richard L. Kovach, Senior Vice President, Global Sales & Marketing brings extensive experience in senior positions in Orthopaedic device leadership, sales, marketing, business development, and operations. Mr. Kovach most recently was with Small Bone Innovations serving as its Senior Vice President for the last two years. He previously was President & Chief Operating Officer of OrthoHelix, where he oversaw the development of a comprehensive portfolio of small bone implants that led to a sevenfold gain in revenues over a three-year period. He also co-founded with surgeons, a successful online foot & ankle medical education site called Foot Innovate. Earlier in his career, Kovach served in executive roles in venture capital, management consulting as well as in a variety of operating companies. He received his B.S.B.A. degree in Economics and Accounting from The Ohio State University and earned his M.B.A. from Case Western Reserve University.
MICHAEL T. GILLEM
Michael T. Gillem, Vice President of Sales brings to Cayenne Medical over 18 years of documented sales and sales management success in the medical device space primarily focused on novel and potentially disruptive technologies. Most recently, Gillem served as Vice President of Sales at Stereotaxis where his focus of driving capital equipment helped deliver a 27% increase of revenue in 2009 versus 2008. Prior to Stereotaxis, Gillem held several senior level positions helping to introduce technology to the market place and drive clinical adoption. Most notably was his early involvement with Foxhollow Technologies. As an Area Director, Gillem’s involvement with the commercial plan helped grow the company to over 200 sales professionals leading to an explosive revenue growth resulting in one of the most successful device start-ups. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University.
Kereshmeh Shahriari, Director of Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs, is a skilled Engineer with more than a decades worth of experience overseeing quality and/or regulatory issues pertaining to medical devices. Most recently, Shahriari served as Senior Quality Engineer for Bard Peripheral Vascular where she managed quality assurance for new product development programs and implemented FDA and ISO standards throughout the new product development cycle. Earlier in her career, Shahriari was a Quality Engineer for CTI (Siemens Medical Solutions). She received her Master of Science degree in Bio-Engineering from Arizona State University and her Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from Azad University in Tehran.
DEV K. MISHRA, M.D.
Dr. Dev Mishra, Medical Director, is double Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, bringing over 16 years of experience to Cayenne. He continues to practice sports medicine in Burlingame, California, with a special interest in sports related injuries to young athletes. Currently, Dr. Mishra advises several venture capital firms, including SV LifeSciences, Onset Ventures, The Innovation Factory, and Intersect Partners. Additionally, he holds the positions of Chief Medical Officer at AlterG, Inc., is President of Sideline Sports Doc, LLC and team physician for several Bay Area high schools & the United States Soccer Federation National Teams. Prior to joining Cayenne Medical, Dr. Mishra served as a medical officer at Oratec Interventions, Inc., MedModus, Inc, and as a Clinical Advisor to Stryker Endoscopy. He received his undergraduate at Yale University and his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego in 1988. During his residency, also at UCSD, he received the Zimmer/AOA Resident Award for his research on exercise induced muscle injury and completed a fellowship in Orthopedic Research. Following residency, Dr. Mishra completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
