Management Team

The Cayenne management team combines over 100 years of experience in the medical device industry, with primary expertise in the less invasive surgery markets. The team background spans a range from large corporations to venture capital operations.


David B. Springer, President and Chief Executive Officer, brings more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare and medical devices industries. Most recently, Springer held the position of President & Chief Executive Officer at CHF Solutions where among his many achievements was a successful acquisition of the company by Gambro. Prior to this, Springer held the position of Sr. Vice President for St. Jude Medical where he was successful in creating and leading all US strategic and operational plans. In 1997, he was a member of the founding management team of WebMD (formerly QDCS, Inc.) where he held the positions of Executive Vice President of Business Development and Senior Vice President of Sales. Prior to WebMD, Springer served in various leadership positions in sales, corporate accounts and marketing at Intermedics, Kimberly Clark Healthcare and Procter & Gamble. Springer received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.


Randal L. Buness, Chief Financial Officer, is a CPA and senior financial executive with over 25 years of results-oriented leadership. Prior to joining Cayenne Medical, he served as Chief Financial Officer of multiple high-growth, public and private technology companies with annual sales up to $250 million. Such companies included United Medical Network, a medical communications company that he co-founded and which was acquired by Johnson & Johnson. His financial background includes expertise in venture capital, public stock offerings and mergers and acquisitions. Early in his career, Buness spent ten years in public accounting at Ernst & Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He graduated summa cum laude from Seattle University, where he earned a B.A. in business administration and accounting and he holds an M.B.A. in international finance from Thunderbird School of Global Management.


Derek J. Harper, Vice President of Research and Development, joined the company in June 2005 as the first company employee, working with the founding team to achieve proof-of-concept of the company’s first device for ACL reconstruction, resulting in successful Series A caplitalization in January, 2006. Mr. Harper has over 25 years of medical device experience, most of which has been in start-ups of various stages. Prior to joining Cayenne Medical, Mr. Harper held key positions in Engineering and Marketing at PS Medical, Medtronic, MDC Research and MicroSolutions. Mr. Harper is a Bioengineer and has authored or co-authored 20+ issued US patents related to medical devices. Mr. Harper received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a specialty in Bioengineering from Arizona State University.


Mr. Richard L. Kovach, Senior Vice President, Global Sales & Marketing brings extensive experience in senior positions in Orthopaedic device leadership, sales, marketing, business development, and operations.  Mr. Kovach most recently was with Small Bone Innovations serving as its Senior Vice President for the last two years.  He previously was President & Chief Operating Officer of OrthoHelix, where he oversaw the development of a comprehensive portfolio of small bone implants that led to a sevenfold gain in revenues over a three-year period. He also co-founded with surgeons, a successful online foot & ankle medical education site called Foot Innovate.  Earlier in his career, Kovach served in executive roles in venture capital, management consulting as well as in a variety of operating companies.  He received his B.S.B.A. degree in Economics and Accounting from The Ohio State University and earned his M.B.A. from Case Western Reserve University.
